This original 18th century painting, while in the style of Italy's late Baroque period old masters, is rather a colonial painting from the Americas. 'La Virgen de la Leche', or 'The Blessed Virgin of Milk', represents Mary nursing the infant Jesus, both surrounded by an aura of radiant gold light and colorful flower garlands. Although nudity during this genre was generally discouraged, and at times, could be considered a punishable offense, The 'Virgen de la Leche' and her sacred milk were looked upon differently. Much like the blood of Christ, milk was the blood of humanity, and it was believed to provide wisdom and help cure infections.
The painting is displayed in a fine 18th century hand carved and gilt wood frame -- masterfully carved, primed, gilt and hand burnished..
Condition: in overall excellent condition. Canvas with cracquelure throughout.
Dimensions: 23 inches vertical x 19 inches horizontal (frame).
