This early 20th century hand woven and hand knotted Tulu comes from central Anatolia - circa 1940's / 1950's. The word 'Tulu' means 'long haired' in Turkish, and long haired Tulu such as the one offered here, were used in village homes as sleeping beds. Thick angora wool was a good source of warmth -- providing insulation from chilly Anatolian nights and frosty alpine air. Although thick and very heavy in the hand, the angora wool is incredibly soft and supple with a rich, glossy patina.
The selvedge is tightly woven and complete on both side. The ends are finished in a flat-weave with hand tied wool tassels on one end. Colors are all natural, abrashed white / brown with a darker dye batch on one end.
