This 19th century hand carved and polychrome painted figure represents 'El Transito de Maria', or 'El Dormicion de Maria', a rare subject unique to Catholicism. The Dormition of Mary symbolizes the glorification of the body of the Virgin Mary -- having completed the course of her earthly life; her body and soul are assumed into heaven.
Pinned to her garments is a 19th century card, which translates: 'Maria, accept this little ..... as a reminder of your son. Senora Dona Mercedes M de Morales. September 24 of 1883.'
Dimensions: approximately 19 inches.
