This extremely rare early 18th century Spanish colonial oil on canvas painting represents the Virgin Mary presenting a portrait of St Dominic to a Dominican friar in the foreground. Mary, encircled by radiant light and a ring of cherubs, is crowned as the Queen of Heaven. Flanked by Mary Magdalene, to her right, and Catherine of Alexandria, to her left, she presents a miraculous portrait that records the apparition of Saint Dominic, a 16th century event that occurred in Soriano, Calabria.
The canvas is displayed in the original hand carved and polychrome painted frame, a beautiful work of art in itself.
Dimensions: 33.5 inches vertical x 25 inches horizontal.
Condition: Original 18th century canvas together with original wood stretchers. A period patch repair along lower edge.
