Since the dawn of the colonial period petacas (travel cases in English) were used as the principle method of transporting personal goods, miscellaneous objects and household wares throughout much of the New World. Given the rugged terrain of the Andean Altiplano, these cases were built to withstand onerous journeys on the backs of alpaca, mule and yoked oxen.
The Andean petaca offered here was made by hand more than 250 years ago from sturdy raw-hyde, leather and iron. Unfortunately, there are few surviving examples, and those that do come to market are often in a terrible state of disrepair. This petaca is in excellent, original, unrestored condition with good wear and surface patina throughout.
** Please note: this listing is for the petaca only. Other furniture and accessories shown for purposes of scale.
Dimensions: 34 inches long x 22 inches wide x 15 inches high.
