A collection of three enormous early 20th-entury hand-scraped hand-adzed teak-wood slit drums with remnants of old paint and excellent surface patination.
A slit drum is a type of hollowed percussion instrument with an acoustic sound that can reverberate for miles. Given the long distance broadcast they are capable of producing, slit drums served as important communication devices for entire communities. Drums liker the examples offered here would have been struck with a wood mallet to announce the birth of a child, a meeting, tribal gathering, or important ceremonial events.
