The Santo Nino de Jesus is the subject of this early 19th century colonial sculpture. Hand carved from a single wood blank by a skilled colonial santero who was clearly a master of his trade. The anatomical features are convincing, the proportions are precise and the meticulous details, which include skin folds, carved teeth, flowing hair tresses and inset glass eyes, are represented faithfully. The posturing, gesturing and perhaps most of all, the expressive character manifested in this sculpture is sublime.
Dimensions: 23 inches high.
Condition notes: lacking forearm, several fingers.
