Santiago Matamoros (Saint James the Moor Slayer) is depicted in this dramatic 19th century Mexican tin folk retablo. Saint James is usually represented as he is here, as a soldier in battle attire with defeated Moorish soldiers underfoot. His bright red banner is inscribed:
'Viva la Fe de Dios'
or
'Live the Faith of God'
Dimensions: 10 inches vertical x 7 inches horizontal.
Condition: oxidation around the dust bowl in lower right. Clearly not deliberate. Ironic nonetheless.
