This very rare 19th century retablo painting depicts Santa Lucia, patroness saint of the blind, eye disease, peasants, authors and laborers. Saint Lucy is almost always depicted as she is here, holding a martyr's palm and a platter with a pair of eyes. The eyes are a reference to her execution gruesome execution, in which she was stabbed to death after having her eyes torn out. Legend tells of her eyes and vision being restored before her death.
