This rare 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents 'Santa Librata' -- invoked by married women seeking liberation from difficult husbands and those suffering at the hour of death. According to legend, her father (King of Lusitania) had arranged her marriage with the King of Sicily. To prevent the unwanted marriage, Santa Librata prayed to be liberated and took a private vow of celibacy. The following day she sprouted a beard, her suitor departed and her father, in anger, had her crucified. Santa Librata is always depicted as she is here, as a crucified martyr with a large and colorful garland of roses.
