Santa Ifigenia of Ethiopia, arguably one of the most obscure subjects in Spanish colonial and Mexican folk art, is depicted in this extremely rare 19th century Mexican retablo painting. Saint Ephigenia (“born strong” in Greek) is the patroness saint of black people, slaves and those forced into marriage.
