This late 18th / early 19th century Spanish colonial oil on canvas painting represents Santa Gertrudis together with the Santo Nino de Jesus. 'Saint Gertrude the Great', theologian, mystic and German Benedictine, is one of the earliest devotees to the Sacred Heart of Jesus - hence the iconography in the painting offered here. She is perhaps best known for the sympathy she shows towards souls in purgatory -- venerated, petitioned and invoked by loved ones for suffering purgatorial sinners.
Displayed in a handsome ebonized wood frame with beaded and gilt wood edge.
Dimensions: Frame measures 33.5 inches vertical x 25 inches horizontal. Canvas measures 28.5 inches x 20.25 inches.
Condition: In excellent, original, unrestored condition. Original canvas together with original wood stretchers.
