This extremely fine and rare 19th century retablo painting by Geronimo de Leon, one of Mexico's most important retablo painters, represents San Rafael Archangel.
** See reference book 'Geronimo de Leon - Pintor de Milagros' for additional works by Geronimo de Leon (cover pictured above).
San Rafael is the patron saint of eye ailments and safe journeys and he is almost always depicted as he is here, with his gourd, his traveler's staff, his cloak, and a fish. The fish, which he used to cure his father's blindness, is perhaps his most identifiable attribute.
The retablo is displayed in the original frame, also hand made and hand painted by Geronimo de Leon. His unique painterly style is unmistakable.
Condition: excellent, original.
Dimensions: retablo measures 14 inches x 10 inches, plus frame.
