This rare 19th century retablo represents "San Rafael Archangel," patron saint of eye ailments and safe journeys. San Rafael is almost always depicted as he is here, with his gourd, his traveler's staff, his cloak, and a fish. The fish, which he used to cure his father's blindness, is perhaps his most identifiable attribute. The retablo is attributed to Concepcion Avila - the so called "bee sting lip" painter. His unique style is unmistakable.
Dimensions: 9 inches x 6 inches.
