This 19th century 'tabla' painting represents 'San Nicolas Tolentino'. Saint Nicholas of Tolentine is the patron saint of sick animals, babies, mariners and souls in purgatory, and he is almost always depicted as he is here, with a white partridge and two fingers pointing to God. According to popular belief, San Nicolas fell ill one day and he was instructed to eat more meat. He was served a partridge and after making the sign of the cross, the bird came to life and flew away. He was also venerated by nine passengers on a capsized ship -- appearing in the sky with a lily in his hand, he broke the storm and saved them all.
Dimensions: approximately 8 inches vertical x 6 inches horizontal.
Condition notes: in excellent, unrestored condition.
