San Nicolas de Ibarra, also known as Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, is depicted in this extremely rare 19th century folk retablo. There are many miracles attributed to Saint Nicholas but his miraculous intercession in the murder of three children is perhaps his most popular. The vignette in lower left is a reference to that miracle -- three children were murdered in a brine tub and then rescued by Saint Nicholas and miraculously restored to life.
In addition to his many miracles he was also known for bestowing generous gifts upon others, a custom which helped engender the tradition of Christmas gifts and Santa Claus
