This extremely rare 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents San Matias, the apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot after he was hung for treason. Saint Matthias is the patron saint of alcoholics, tailors and carpenters, and is usually depicted in retablo art with a carpenter's square, an axe or a bow saw, like the one included here. The loose scroll from his book identifies him as 'San Matias'.
