This magnificent hand carved and polychrome painted figure from the Spanish Basque Country represents San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist) - prophet of the envisaged messiah. Although we date this to the middle of the 17th century, stylistically, everything about this piece points to a much earlier time in history. This piece is characterized by late Romanesque and early Gothic period features -- shallow carving with elongated torso and unique anatomical features. Carved depictions of the human form from these periods tend to focus on linear details with emphasis on drapery folds and hair. All of the aforementioned features are manifested in the piece offered here.
Saint John is outfitted in his traditional camel skin robe which is carved from the same piece of chestnut as the head, torso and legs. The polychromy is original, and in remarkably good condition.
Dimensions: approximately 37 inches high.
