The Martyrdom of San Hipolito.
This exceedingly rare 18th century Spanish colonial oil on copper painting represents San Hipolito Martir. Saint Hippolytus is the patron saint of horses and prison guards. In Latin, the word ‘Hipo’ means horse and ‘Lito’ means loose. Hippolitus was tied to two wild horses and dragged to his death.
Displayed in a fine quality 18th century gilt-wood frame.
** According to Kurt Stephen's Acquisition Scale of Ascending Difficulty, which ranks the rarity of subjects on a scale of one to ten (ten being the most rare), San Hipolito ranks nine.
Dimensions: copper painting measures 16 inches x 12.5 inches. Frame measures 20 inches x 14.5 inches.
