This very rare 19th century retablo represents San Caralampio, an early Christian saint martyred by decapitation. Legend tells of Caralampio, a bishop in Thessaly, having been arrested and brutally tortured at the age of 113 for proselytizing the death of Christ. San Caralampio, indifferent to the various torture techniques, was ultimately beheaded by order of the infuriated emperor. He is the patron saint of those who pray against pestilence as well as contagious airs and hungers.
According to Kurt Stephen's Acquisition Scale of Ascending Difficulty, which ranks the rarity of retablo Virgins, Cristos and Saints on a scale of one to ten (ten being the most rare), San Caralampio is ranked eight.
