This exceedingly sweet, late 19th century retablo depicts Saint Anthony, patron saint of lost articles, fertility, starvation, expectant mothers, amputees and shipwrecks. Saint Anthony is depicted together with the Christ child -- surrounded by puffy white clouds and an aura of radiant light.
One of Mexico's most notorious retablo painters, Concepcion Avila, is better known by his handle - 'The Bee Sting Lip Painter'. The retablo offered here however is attributed to an entirely different painter, 'The Red Eyelid Painter', but if there were ever a subject that epitomized Concepcion Avila's trademark 'bee sting lips', it would be this tightly puckered Saint Antony retablo.
