San Antonio de Abad / Saint Anthony the Great
Mexican folk retablo. Circa 1870
San Antonio de Abad, said to be the father of all monks, is the patron of butchers, weavers, amputees and swineherds. He is also petitioned by those suffering from infectious disease including shingles, syphilis and erysipelas. Saint Antony was the founder and patron of the the 'Hospitallers of St. Anthony', a charitable monastic order who raised swine to treat those suffering from infectious disease - hence the pig as his attribute.
