This rare 18th century Spanish colonial figural santo represents Saint Sebastian, patron saint of athletes, archers and soldiers. According to popular belief, during the time of Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians, Sebastian concealed his faith, and under sentence of death, made numerous converts to Christianity. When his faith was discovered that he was ordered executed, tied to a stump and shot with arrows.
Carved and polychrome painted wood with excellent wear and surface patina.
