This classic 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents The Archangel Michael, leader of the Army of God against the forces of evil. San Miguel is usually depicted as he is here, as a winged archangel in battle attire, standing triumphantly, fiery sword brandished, with Lucifer subdued underfoot. He is the patron saint of police officers, soldiers, mariners and paratroopers -- often petitioned by those who are sick.
