San Juan Nepomuceno / Saint John of Nepomuk
Mexico. Circa 1880
During the Kingdom of Bohemia's bitter conflict between church and state, Saint John of Nepomuk, refusing the divulge Queen Sophia's confession, was tortured with fire by King Wencesla, then gagged, carried to the Bridge of Prague and thrown into the Vitava river. Later that night seven bright stars were visible over the spot where he drowned. Of his many miracles, it is said that three hundred years after his execution John of Nepomuk was exhumed and his tongue was as alive as it was the day he was born. He is the patron saint of lawyers and secrets and venerated for protection against floods and drowning.
