This very charming 19th century Mexican folk retablo, circa 1860, represents Santa Eduviges, presenting the 'eye of god' and devoting her riches to the impecunious pair in the foreground. Saint Hedwig is one of the more obscure subjects in retablo art. She is the patroness saint of Bavaria, brides, jealousy and difficult marriages -- known mostly for her generosity, bestowing all that she could give to the sick, the feeble, the impoverished and the imprisoned.
This retablo is beautifully rendered -- bright, cheerful and colorful, with atypical trademarks -- specifically the 'Eye of God', which appears to be in the exact likeness of Santa Eduviges. The inscription along the lower edge: 'Sta. Ydubige'
** Attributed to the 'Calligraphic Line Painter'.
Dimensions: 8.9 inches vertical x 6.6 inches horizontal.
Overall condition is excellent with only minor paint loss.
