A fine quality 18th century Spanish colonial six panel arcon from Mexico. This arcon, was fashioned out of hand hewn Montezuma Cypress timbers, or Sabino, more than 200 years ago -- a sacred tree native to native to Mexico that has been utilized by Aztec civilizations for it's healing properties since Pre-Columbian times. The sabino tree became the national tree of Mexico in 1910.
In addition to it's richly colored sabino timbers, this baul also features an interior candle till, a slightly rounded top and a hand wrought iron 'chapa', or lock-plate, all raised on the original bun feet. The corners are connected by a complex and sophisticated dovetail joint, otherwise known as the 'Pato de Gallo', or rooster's feet.
