This intricately detailed 19th century double sided Andean reliquary represents 'Our Lady of Copacabana' on one face and 'Our Lady of Socabon' on the other, the latter identified by her title within a cartouche in lower right. .
Our Lady of Copacabana, alight on both crescent moon and lotus flower, is flanked by colorful banners and encircled by a ring of stars. On the opposite face, Our Lady of Socabon embraces the Santo Nino in one hand while clutching a candle, a rosary and a basket of white doves in her other.
Displayed behind the original crystal and still housed in the original silver case, the painted relic was executed on imported cold rolled tin plate approximately 150 years ago. To execute such a strong painting on such a diminutive scale requires a level of proficiency not often seen today. This consummate painter was clearly a master of his trade, capable of executing nano scale paintings with enormous character.
Dimensions: 5.5 inches to top of bail.
Condition is excellent with only minor paint loss.
