This 19th century hand painted Andean reliquary represents 'Our Lady of Mt. Carmel' on one face and 'Saint Joseph' on the other.
Given her many apparitions and miracles, it is no wonder 'Nuestra Senora de Carmen' is one of the most important and popular subjects in the Americas. She has always been associated with purgatory, seen rescuing purgatorial souls from a fiery pit. She is venerated for protection from harmful situations, dangerous situations and petitioned by those seeking deliverance from purgatory. She continues to offer general aid and assistance to fallen purgatorial souls, often reaching deep into the fiery flames and raising her faithful and devoted apostles out of harm's way.
Saint Joseph, represented on the opposite face, is the patron saint of family, fathers and carpenters. He is almost always depicted as he is here, embracing the 'Santo Nino' and clutching his blooming staff of lilies (his symbol of purity).
These beautiful miniature image(s) were hand painted on imported cold rolled tin-plate by an accomplished painter who utilized nothing straight than natural pigments, binders, tin plate and a squirrel hair paint brush.
Displayed behind the original leaded glass pane, inside the original sterling silver case.
Dimensions: 3.75 inches to top of bail x 2.75 inches wide.
Condition notes: In overall good condition with only minor paint loss. Unrestored and original.
