This early 20th century cedar-wood tablet (circa 1930's) is a hand painted Quranic teaching tablet from Morocco. Quranic tablets were used in Moroccan Madrasah to help students learn Quranic scripture, a teaching tool that dates back centuries, and which was preceded by other mediums such as parchment, stone, leaves and even bone. Each tablet was painted with quill pens dipped in ink, washed with water and then inscribed again after Quranic verses were memorized.
This Quranic tablet is covered over in beautiful hand written Arabic calligraphy. It has been well used as evidenced by the illustrious surface patina.
