Albeit graphic, this pair of 18th century Spanish colonial figures are good, rare examples of 'penitents'. The larger, San Nicolas Tolentino, and the smaller,Pedro de Alcantara. each with graphic scourge marks and penetrating spikes Hand carved and polychrome painted wood with gessoed cloth, molded leather and inset glass eyes. Circa 1750.
Dimensions: Nicolas Tolentino measures 14 inches high x 8 inches long x 5 inches wide. Pedro de Alcantara measures 11.5 inches high.
Condition: Scattered paint loss, wear commensurate with age. Pedro de Alcantara with a later wooden base.
