A pair of fine and rare late 18th century talavera Poblana albarello (apothecary jars) from Puebla de los Angeles, circa 1750 - 1800.
Devoid of the elaborate designs found on later talavera, these vertical jars feature simple grapevine and geometric motifs separated by a milk white slip. Many of the design elements, forms, throwing methods, firing practices and glazes manifested in Mexico's talavera trade were drawn from Italian, Spanish, Muslim and Chinese predecessors. Chinese blue on white pottery, for which Mexico had an insatiable appetite, had become vogue in the late 16th century. Jars, basins, platters, bowls and many other wares made their way to Mexico via Acapulco's China trade ports, and in order to satisfy the growing demand, the spirited indigenous and itinerant artisans of Puebla drew upon Spanish, Italian, Mudejar and Oriental designs to form their own unique creations. This nonpareil art form came to be known after its city namesake, 'Talavera Poblana'.
In keeping with tradition, the pair of blue on white albarello offered here parallel the division of field and restricted design attributes that Poblana potters had come to be known for. The overall level of quality is superlative
