This very rare 19th century oil on tin retablo painting represents 'Nuestra Señora de la Soledad' (Our Lady of Solitude) - the patroness saint of Oaxaca. Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is one of the titles of Santa Maria (Mary) given to commemorate the solitude of Mary on Holy Saturday. Dissimilar to other examples of the same subject, this version includes the symbols of the passion in the margin and a small vignette depicting Calvary which is surmounted by the title of the painting.
Provenance: This retablo comes from the collection of Fernando Juarez Friaz, author of 'Retablos Populares Mexicanos', one of the best retablo reference books ever published. The hand painted wooden frame, a collectible work of art in itself, was the creation of Fernando Friaz. The frame is backed in wood and inscribed with collection and inventory information.
Dimensions: Frame measures 14 inches x 11 inches. Retablo measures 10 inches x 7 inches.
Condition: in overall excellent, original condition with only minor paint loss.
