Nuestra Señora de la Merced is the subject of this early 19th century colonial oil on canvas painting. A three quarter portrait, Our Lady of Mercy wears the scapular shield of the Mercedarian order together with a luminous gold reliquary suspended from a matching gold brooch. Her large gold coronas, adorned with red rubies and green emeralds, is encircled by twelve stars and an aura of light.
The proud painter who who rendered image applied his gold ground copiously to create the luminous effect in her crown, collar and radiance - an expensive and laborious process which involves hand mixing high karat metallic gold and then hand scraping the applied leaf from the canvas to reveal the underlying surface. The overall level of artistry is superlative. Displayed in a period wood frame.
Dimensions: 26 inches vertical x 21 inches horizontal.
Condition notes: in overall good condition.
