This incredibly fine mid 19th century 'Our Lady of Copacanana' retablo was hand painted on imported tin-plate by a skilled artisan who used nothing more than a squirrel hair paint brush. Given the small scale, the tiny flower blossoms, the brilliant gold work and the subtle architectural details, it's difficult to envisage the skill and control, required to design, develop and execute with such finesse.
Our Lady of Copacabana, perched atop her white lotus flower, is encircled by a ring of silver stars and flanked by a pair of colonial columns with a baroque tudor arch overhead. The author of this beautiful retablo created the illuminations by using real gold leaf metallic paint, and 150 years later it is still brilliant, with an iridescent quality that glimmers when held against the light. The rich and colorful pigments, coupled together with the acute detail and aforementioned gold palette, is simply sublime. Inscribed along the lower edge - 'Verdadero R. de Nra. Sra. de Copacavana'
Dimensions: 6 inches vertical x 4 inches horizontal.
Condition: in overall excellent condition with only minor paint loss.
