This 19th century Mexican folk retablo painting represents 'Nuestra Señora de Carmen' (Our Lady of Mount Carmel). Given her many apparitions and miracles, it is no wonder she is one of the most important and popular subjects in the Americas. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel has always been associated with purgatory, seen rescuing purgatorial souls from a fiery pit. She is venerated for protection from harmful situations, protection from dangerous situations and petitioned by those seeking deliverance from purgatory. She continues to offer general aid and assistance to fallen purgatorial souls, often reaching deep into the fiery flames and raising her faithful and devoted apostles out of harm's way.
Oil on tin. Circa 1870 - 1880.
Dimensions: frame measures 17 inches x 13 inches. Retablo measures 14 inches x 10 inches.
Condition: very good with only minor paint loss.
