This finely sculpted early 19th century Neapolitan fragment is made entirely of pigmented beeswax. The practice of casting and modeling beeswax can be traced back to the Middle ages, but ultimately, this tradition reached its zenith during the late Renaissance period. In the late 18th century much of the work was being performed by woman and their creations came in many forms -- medallion portraits, relief plaques, effigies, ancestral death masks and figural sculptures similar to the fragmentary piece offered here. This finely carved bust represents one of the Roman soldiers who escorted Jesus Christ along the Via Dolorosa to Golgotha, or Calvary as it is also known, the sacred hilltop outside of the walls of Jerusalem where he was crucified.
Hand modeled and pigmented beeswax with inset glass eyes. Displayed on a high quality custom made stand.
Dimensions: overall height is 5 inches. Wax composition measures 3 inches high.
Condition notes: fragmentary.
