Nuestra Señora de la Cueva Santa (Our Lady of the Sacred Cave) is the subject of this incredibly fine and rare 19th century Mexican folk retablo. This exquisite painting is arguably one of the strongest retablos we have ever handled, a coveted subject, rich in both color and character.
Our Lady of the Sacred Cave is almost always depicted as she is here - positioned before a bell shaped grotto, with colorful vegetation and foliate motifs in the periphery. Her bejeweled corona and grotto were both painted in real gold using high karat gold leaf metallic paint. The gold tonality is brilliant, luminous and iridescent when held against the light.
The retablo is entitled along the lower edge" 'N.S. de la Cueva Santa'..
Displayed in a magnificent solid silver Spanish colonial style frame - a beautiful work of art in itself.
Dimensions: Framed dimensions:: 19.5 inches vertical x 15.5 inches horizontal. Retablo measures 14 inches x 10 inches.
Condition: excellent, original, unrestored.
