A hand carved and polychrome painted rabbit mask from Mexico - circa 1940's. Given the diminutive scale, this small mask was most likely made for and danced by a child. The mask body and protracted rabbit ears were shaped and adzed by hand from the same piece of wood. One of the ears, not surprisingly given their fragility, shows an old honest repair that is tightly bound to the body of the mask with knotted rope. The thick layer of milky white paint, reapplied year after year, shows good honest wear and surface patina.
Dimensions: overall height, including ears, is 7 inches. Measures 4.75 inches wide.
