This 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents 'Mater Dolorosa' or 'Our Lady of Seven Sorrows'. While this subject may be common, this particular composition is anything but. This painter clearly had a style uniquely his own. The anatomical features, while disproportionate, imperfect and two dimensional, are exactly the features that make this naive folk painting special.
Dimensions: 14 inches vertical x 10 inches horizontal.
Condition: paint loss, wear.
