Lustermaennachen Lute Player
Germany Circa 1700
The German Lusterweibchen, a type of figural carving joined to horizontal stag horn, has a long and rich history with the earliest known examples dating back to the end of the 14th century. The vast majority of these fanciful sculptures represent female figures; woman of title, German nobility, Goddesses, mermaids, angels and busty Bavarian Dirndl. Counterpart to the Lusterweibchen, the far more obscure male luster, or Leuchtermännchen, will sometimes take the form of huntsman, bellman, monk, noblemen or musicians, much like the early lute player offered here.
Hand carved, polychrome painted and parcel gilt walnut and stag horn. Circa 1700.
