A pair of finely sculpted early to mid 19th century 'Anima Sola' figures, both with deeply carved red and orange flames, inset glass eyes and arms raised in a gesture of salvation. The male figure, tonsured and the female with long flowing tresses cascading down her back-side. Circa 1840.
The Anima Sola, for those unfamiliar, are departed ancestral souls awaiting judgement in the flames of purgatory. The Anima Sola (Lonely Soul) may be invoked when a family member or loved one dies in sin or conversely, to send an enemy to a state of temporary suffering or misery in purgatory.
