This large 19th century Mexican folk retablo painting on tin represents 'La Virgen Dolorosa'. While this subject may common, this composition is anything but. The accomplished painter who produced this beautiful image was clearly skilled in his craft. The anatomical features and the proportions may be imperfect, but the angular nature of her face, the bridge of her nose, the depth of her large brown eyes and the shadows that surround them are lovely. These painterly attributes point to a proficient artisan who had the aptitude to produce a retablo that is both innocent and naive, yet poised, elegant and graceful. An all around beautiful composition.
Dimensions: 18 inches vertical x 12 inches horizontal.
