19th century Mexican retablo - La Virgen del Apocalipsis. Oil on tin.
The Virgin of the Apocalypse, with orb and Eden's serpent underfoot, is flanked by a palm tree on one side and a cypress on the other - respective symbols of victory over sin and death. Overseen by God The Father, the face of a brilliant orange sun is partially obscured by Maria's veil -- a reference to "a woman clothed with the sun". "(A woman clothed with the sun is interpreted as referring to the most Blessed Mary, the Mother of all men by the grace of Christ the Redeemer.)" Displayed in a handsome 19th century gilt-wood frame.
Dimensions: retablo measures8 inches vertical x 6 inches horizontal. Frame measures 10 inches x 8 inches.
Condition: minor scattered paint loss, shallow scratches.
