This rare 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents 'La Sombra de San Pedro' - or 'The Shadow of Saint Peter,' Saint Peter, patron saint of locksmiths, cobblers, bakers and longevity, holds a pair of skeleton keys -- a reference to his title as the "doorkeeper to the gates of heaven." The figure in lower left represents Saint Peter's shadow, a symbol for any man or woman in need of a favor or miracle. Being in Saint Peter's shadow will always allow the favor to be granted
Attributed to Agustin Barajas, also known as the 'Skimpy Painter.'
