** See reference book 'Geronimo de Leon - Pintor de Milagros' for additional works by Geronimo de Leon (cover pictured above)
La Madre Santisma de la Luz or the Holy Mother of Light represents Mary rescuing a man from the jaws of a fiery dragon in lower left. In the right quadrant, Baby Jesus picks souls from a basket held by an angel. An all around great folk retablo - layered with allegory and symbolism throughout.
The retablo is displayed behind glass in the original frame, also hand made and hand painted by Geronimo de Leon. His unique painterly style is unmistakable.
Inscribed and dated January 26, 1901
Dimensions: 14 inches x 10 inches, plus frame.
Condition is excellent with only minor paint loss.
