This 18th century Spanish colonial oil on copper painting represents 'La Coronacion de Santa Maria'. The Coronation of Mary is a popular theme in Spanish colonial art that has its roots in the fresco paintings of Italy's early Gothic period. The Holy Trinity -- The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit, seated on a bed of clouds, are shown together crowning the head of Mary as 'Queen of the Universe. The central rondel is surrounded by a garland of colorful blossoming flowers over a midnight black slip.
