A good early 20th century Mexican oil on canvas by well listed portrait painter, Horacio Renteria Rocha (1912 - 1972).
In 1932, under the guidance of his teacher, William de Lourdes, Horacio was hired to paint murals on the walls of Durango's municipality buildings. At the Palace of Durango, one of his murals, which included several children, attracted the attention of the master's assistant and from that day on, Horacio's would hone his skills as a portrait painter of young children. Horacio's unique style, which almost always depict young children bedecked in the Sunday best, was often copied but never equalled. Agapito Labios, Oscar and Eduardo Tameriz painted in a similar style but never matched his virtuosity. Horacio's works are collected worldwide and his paintings have been exhibited in major museums such as the Louvre in Paris, the Museo del Prado in Madrid and the National Museum of Art in Mexico. In recent years the popularity of his work has exploded. His paintings can be found in the collections of actor Henry Fonda, fashion designer Christian Dior, conductor Leopold Stokowski and former US President Lyndon B. Johnson.
