Heron Martinez Mendoza Tree of Life
Acatlán de Osorio, Mexico.. Circa 1950.
In addition to it's winsome design characteristics, this enormous tree of life, topping out at 53 inches, also earns the honor of being in its own height and weight division. Heron Martinez Mendoza (1918 - 1990) was known for his ceramic acrobatic figures, creche figures, circus animals, ceramic churches and trapeze artists. These popular designs would later culminate into what many consider the most important chapter of Martinez's career, the "White Period", a period characterized by whimsy, imagination and spontaneity embodied in ceramic bisque sculptures and glazed in chalk white gesso blanco. This white period tree of life candelabrum is distinguished by birds, playful deer, five pointed stars, ducks and flower blossoms, each connected by wire to a labyrinth of interconnected and reticulated armatures divided into four tiers and terminating into twelve candle-sockets.
Dimensions: Height: 53 inches.
