This fine and rare early 20th century (circa 1920) hand woven and hand knotted Tulu comes from central Anatolia. Given the small size, only 51 inches long x 36 inches wide, this piece was clearly woven for a child.
The word 'Tulu' means 'long haired' in Turkish, and long haired Tulu such as the one offered here, were used in village homes as sleeping mattresses. Thick angora wool was a good source of warmth -- providing insulation from chilly Anatolian nights and frosty alpine air.
The main design feature is a unique geometric symbol in blue surrounded by a natural white field and multiple natural brown borders. The wool is incredibly soft and supple with glossy patina throughout. The colors are all natural.
The selvedge is tightly woven and complete on both sides. The ends are finished in a very fine, tightly woven flat-weave with hand knotted trim.
